Scaling is a method used to remove plaque and tartar that prevents caries and gum diseases.
Fluoride treatment is a method that utilizes highly-fluoride-concentrated -agents such as special gels and liquids that are applied on the tooth surface. Fluoride reacts with the outer enamel layer covering the tooth. Through this reaction it is incorporated into the enamel structure, thus doing, it strengthens the enamel. The tooth is therefore less susceptible to acid and bacterial attack that cause tooth decay.
Fissure sealants are usually applied between 4 and 13 years of age. The sealant is a protective plastic coating containing fluoride, which is applied to the biting surfaces of the back teeth (molars). The sealant forms a hard shield that keeps bacteria from getting into the tiny grooves in the teeth. It is important that the teeth to be sealed are not infected with caries hence it is best to apply sealants soon as the permanent teeth start to come through.
